10 Best High Stability Resistors for Global Sourcing?
Long-term resistance stability depends on more than initial tolerance. For global sourcing, compare TCR, load-life drift, humidity resistance, and thermal cycling results. TCR should be stated in ppm/°C, not described as “low” without figures.
A 5 ppm/°C component changes only 0.0005% per °C, but real circuits also create self-heating. Check rated power, derating curves, and operating temperature together. Small details matter.
IEC 60115-1:2020 provides endurance and environmental test methods for fixed resistors. It also separates resistance change from initial tolerance. That distinction is often missed. A part listed at ±0.1% may still show measurable drift after prolonged load.
Compare the reported percentage change after 1,000 hours, where available, and confirm test temperature, applied power, and humidity. The test conditions must match the application.
NIST Technical Note 1297 emphasizes that measurement uncertainty should accompany reliable measurement claims. Therefore, request resistance data with test uncertainty, sample size, and acceptance limits.
For the ten strongest candidates, examine sulfur resistance, voltage coefficient, pulse capability, and supply continuity across regions.
A ceramic package may improve thermal behavior, yet mechanical stress can still shift resistance. I would not rank a component from TCR alone. That shortcut is tempting, but incomplete.
Production history matters too. Ask for lot-to-lot drift records, not only a polished datasheet.
